If the whole family is happy, then that’s one vacation that’s going to be remembered for all the right reasons. Here are our Top Five picks for a family-friendly holiday.

Orlando

Florida’s quite possibly the ultimate family-friendly destination. With more theme parks than you can count on the fingers of both hands, kids of all ages will be happy. Let them explore not just Disney and Universal’s offerings but old timers like Gatorland and newcomers such as Legoland. Its hot and sunny climate make Orlando the perfect place for splashing around in the pool. With a wide range of family-friendly holiday dining options it doesn’t get much better than this.

Sri Lanka

For kids with a sense of adventure, Sri Lanka’s a great pick for a vacation. Take them elephant-spotting in Uda-Walawe National Park or the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. Alternatively, try your hand at a spot of family tea picking in Hill Country or play a game of cricket beside Galle Fort. There are plenty of activities that will stave off the boredom and be fun for all the family. It’s safe too and you’ll be assured of a warm welcome from the cheerful and kind Sri Lankan people.

Barcelona

If it’s a city break you’re after then Spain’s second city takes a lot of beating. Football mad youngsters (and their parents) will love a tour of Camp Nou. It’s home to Barcelona FC and the third largest stadium in the world. The city’s quirky architecture courtesy of Antoni Gaudi gives the place a fairytale appearance. When you’re done with sightseeing, there’s almost five kilometres of beaches right in the city. Port Aventura theme park is just an hour down the coast.

Lanzarote

The other-worldly scenery of this the most distinctive of the Canaries is sure to capture the family’s imagination. The lunar landscape of this volcanic island is full of unusual attractions. You can ride camels near the volcanic cones of Timanfaya National Park or explore subterranean caves and caverns. Factor in a decent scattering of beaches, hot sunny weather and family-friendly restaurants and you can see why we’d recommend it for families.

The Mayan Riviera

It’s hard to find a more family-oriented region than Latin America. Expect children to be fussed over. The strip of coastline that stretches from Cancun to Tulum along Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is nicknamed the Mayan Riviera. It has a wide range of accommodation to suit any family’s needs. With broad sandy beaches, the cool waters of cenote pools and zip line operations to die for, this is a great place for all ages. Even the ruins are fun. Whether you climb Coba’s pyramid or watch iguanas scuttle out from under shady rocks, they’re sure to be fascinating for kids.
