Celeb favourite Los Cabos is the ideal vacation spot. Warm sunny weather year-round makes this the perfect place for some rest and relaxation. But beyond the beach, what does this part of Mexico have to offer tourists?

Wildlife spotting

Los Cabos, or more specifically, the waters surrounding this end of the Baja peninsula, is one of the world’s best wildlife destinations. It is well known for its marine mammals. Humpback whales arrive in winter to mate and the sight of their babies playing is a delight. Tourists often see whale sharks. Tour operators can arrange snorkelling or free-diving excursions if you’re brave enough to share the water. Year-round, you’ll enjoy the company of reef fish and turtles.

Fishing

Sportfishing is a big deal here and many come to spend their vacation aboard the boats. All sorts of big game fishing takes place here. Tuna, marlin and snapper are among the species of fish that participants reel in. It’s easy to arrange a day out at sea, but if you want a piece of the action without leaving terra firma, time your visit for October. That’s when the biggest sportfishing competition on the peninsula takes place and the catch is weighed in on the quayside for everyone to see.

Sports

Sporty types are well catered for in and around Los Cabos. A number of excellent golf courses are nearby, some attached to top resorts. Mountain bikers will be impressed with the trails which criss-cross the rugged scenery. Surfers also flock to this part of Baja California. The warm waters are perfect for the sport and, so long as you choose carefully, promise consistent waves. Try Zippers and La Roca beaches which equally suit beginners and hardcore enthusiasts.

Land-based action

There’s plenty to do around Los Cabos if you prefer to stay on dry land. Numerous agencies will sort you out with an all terrain vehicle for some fun in the desert interior. For a thrilling bird’s eye view, brave the Superman zipline, the longest and fastest in Mexico. The trails of the Sierra de la Laguna mountains lead up to the area’s highest point, Picacho de la Laguna. From the top, the views over this UNESCO-listed reserve and to the ocean beyond are world-class.

Foodie heaven

Cabo San Lucas has many excellent restaurants thanks to its proximity to the United States and the large number of wealthy visitors that brings. Many of them make the most of their maritime setting and offer delicious fresh seafood such as lobster. However to truly appreciate the cuisine of Baja California you should extend your trip and head north. The margarita was first mixed in a bar in Ensenada, while the Caesar salad hails from Tijuana.
