Day 1-5 Lisbon

Take the 28 tram from the riverfront Baixa to the hills of the Alfama for the best views over the Portuguese capital. Head for Belem to taste the delicious custard tarts known as Pasteis de Nata which are traditionally baked there.

Day 6-9 Sintra
Make an effort to explore Sintra if only for a day. This UNESCO-listed town just a short distance from Lisbon is colourful, historic and charming in equal measure. Climb up to the castle and enjoy spectacular views across the surrounding countryside and marvel at the whimsical design of the Pena Palace.

Day 10-13 Madrid
Explore Spain’s elegant capital. There’s a vast array of European art on show at the Prado Museum and ancient weaponry at the Royal Palace and Armoury. Retiro Park is the place to retire to when the sun’s at its most fierce; take a boat out onto the lake or lie down under the shade of a tree. At night, the city comes alive. Dine late like the locals do and enjoy a late night snack of chocolate and churros to round off your night. .

Day 14-17 Segovia
Experience history come alive in one of central Spain’s most elegant cities. Its Gothic cathedral rises majestically from the cityscape that engulfs it. Also unmissable are the 160 arches of the granite aqueduct that stands above Plaza Azoguejo in the heart of the city.
