As a hotel, the Merchant House in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter is a triumph. From its Italianate façade to the sumptuous interiors, it manages to be beautifully ornate without ever spilling over into ostentatiousness. The grand dome, once the main banking hall, is adorned with cherubs, stained glass and foliage that more than live up to the grandeur of its architecture. Rooms are lavish and bold in their décor which adds to the feeling of luxury. Silk drapes and velvet bedspreads characterise the Victorian-style rooms; suites contain four-posters. Meanwhile the hotel also offers some Art Deco rooms which are glamorous and elegant.
There’s a solidity about the way the Merchant House hotel is designed that wouldn’t be out of place in a centuries-old castle. Yet, the place dates from the mid 19th century and was originally the headquarters of the Ulster Bank.
