The Balmoral began its hospitality journey as the North British Station Hotel which served passengers alighting from trains at Edinburgh Waverley. Regulars referred to it as the NB. Eventually it was privatised and became part of the Gleneagles Hotel Company; less than a decade later it was refurbished and reopened by another new owner, the late great Sean Connery. Today, it’s part of the Rocco Forte group and together with its rival The Caledonian is one of the best hotels in the city. Rooms are grand but dressed to feel homely, with splashes of colour and individual design touches to ensure they’re anything but sterile and impersonal.
Harry Potter fans can book the J.K. Rowling Suite. The author completed the final book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows at the hotel on 11th January 2007. You can see her handwritten note on a marble bust of Hermes, now preserved in a glass cabinet. She famously told chat show host Oprah Winfrey that she’d come in search of peace and quiet because her dogs wouldn’t stop barking and the window cleaner had been disturbing her.
