The historic Metropole opened in 1901. Over the years, it has hosted numerous public figures, including Charlie Chaplin, Robert De Niro, Michael Caine, Fidel Castro, Bill Clinton and Somerset Maugham. Today it continues to attract a discerning clientele who appreciate the hotel’s rich heritage and its luxuriously appointed rooms and suites. Now part of the Sofitel Legend portfolio, the hotel’s divided into two wings. The original Metropole Wing features classical French architecture, parquet floors and ceiling fans, while the neo-classical Opera Wing boasts sumptuous soft furnishings and a bolder colour palette. Six restaurants and bars are ideal for socialising.
During your stay, take a look at the restored bomb shelter which sheltered guests such as Jane Fonda and Joan Baez during the war in the 1960s and 70s. This memorial space is a reminder of the courage shown by the staff in those dark days; historians lead daily tours, exclusive to guests.
