The Charles is part of the Rocco Forte portfolio. Named after Forte’s father, Sir Charles, it was built on the site of a university library as part of the Lenbach Gardens. A great deal of thought has gone into the property, not least the large collection of works by artist Franz von Lenbach, who lived and painted in this part of Munich in the 19th century. The hotel is designed to highlight the stylish curves of the Art Deco movement, with details such as sofas designed to mirror the shape of the hotel’s own façade. Rooms are generously proportioned and in keeping with this family-centric business, styled by Olga Polizzi, Rocco’s sister. Many of them offer stunning views overlooking the Old Botanical Garden and of course the Munich cityscape.
The hotel offers a varied experience programme. Take a tour of BMW Welt – with a meal at the 2 Michelin star EssZimmer, of course – or the Allianz Arena, home of local side Bayern Munich. For something completely different, the Charles can arrange for you to attempt Alpine yodelling at a workshop led by a local tutor.
