Commissioned in 1910 by a British-based hotel company which owned the land, this lavish property was designed by a Swedish-Russian architect and constructed by Germans. It opened in 1912 and was an instant hit with the Imperial family and the Russian aristocracy. Commandeered by the Communists after the 1917 Revolution, Lenin famously gave a speech from its balcony. Today, it – and the neighbouring Angleterre Hotel – are owned and managed by the Rocco Forte group which ensure its reputation for luxury continues into the 21st century. The contemporary interiors are sumptuous and stylish, while its central location ensures guests are within walking distance of many of St Petersburg’s greatest visitor attractions.
