Riggs began life as a bank and there’s a clue to its earlier history in the way you unlock the room as if opening a safety deposit box. But safety deposit boxes never looked this good, with bespoke wallpaper and gorgeous over the top headboards. Bathrooms are opulent, created with the ever-popular Carrara marble. The four First Lady suites, named after Harrison, Van Buren, McKinley and Adams are especially lovely. These spacious suites boast features such as freestanding soaker tubs, antique porcelain, a baby grand piano and colour palettes that reflect particular traits of these remarkable women. Rooms overlook Washington DC’s lively Penn Quarter and the adjacent Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery is an indicator that many of the capital’s premier tourist attractions are right on the doorstep.

There’s a story behind the toiletries you’ll find in Riggs’ bathrooms. A musician and an architect founded the D.S. and Durga brand. The New York duo were each responsible for a different aspect of their products: the architect designed the packaging, while the musician developed songs in scent. Riggs’ chosen fragrance evokes “summer heat, August humidity and young romance” they say.
