Raffles is a Singapore icon. Opened in 1887 as a 10-room hotel, a host of celebrities including Ava Gardner, Elizabeth Taylor, Rudyard Kipling and Noel Coward have stayed here; a tiger and a wild boar once strayed inside this calm and treasured space. It has been significantly enlarged over the years. Following the latest renovation, Raffles now boasts 115 suites. Alexandra Champalimaud worked her magic on the interiors to bring them into the 21st century without losing site of their storied past. The oldest piece of all, a vintage grandfather clock, has pride of place in the lobby alongside the liveried doormen. New dining concepts helmed by Michelin-starred Alain Ducasse and Anne-Sophie Pic will tempt even the fussiest eater.
An essential experience for hotel guests and other visitors is to enjoy a signature Singapore Sling, invented by bartender Ngiam Tong Boon in the Long Bar. This storied bar has been frequented by many famous names over the years; everyone who follows tradition will throwing their peanut shells on the floor.
