Opened in 1963, the Mandarin Oriental – referred to as simply The Mandarin by its regulars – is one of the top five-star hotels in Hong Kong. No expense was spared during its construction, and the same can be said for the lavish refurbishments that have happened since then. Everyone from the Beatles to Beyoncé have stayed here, and the bling measures up: think glittering chandeliers, marble bathrooms and dazzling lobby. The hotel contains 501 luxuriously appointed rooms and suites, many of them overlooking mesmerising Hong Kong Harbour. There’s also a three-storey spa, swimming pool, fitness centre and numerous restaurants.
When it opened, this quintessentially Asian hotel was the tallest in Hong Kong at 26 storeys. That’s not changed, but thanks to land reclamation in the intervening years, the hotel no longer occupies a waterfront position and is several blocks from the harbour. Sister property the Landmark Mandarin Oriental is five minutes away on foot.
