In 1910, inspired by his own travels, wealthy Bellagio local Enea Gandola opened the Grand Hotel across the water in Tremezzo. The Belle Époque gem welcomed high society and rich starlets – Greta Garbo was a fan – with the promise of incredible scenery, sumptuous interiors and glamour by the bucket load. Not much has changed today and this iconic Art Nouveau hotel remains a force to be reckoned with in this haven of luxury hospitality. Rooms vary in size, but the best are those with plenty of space and a view over Lake Como from a private terrace. There’s a spa plus five bars and restaurants. The hotel can also offer cookery classes if you are inspired to create a special dish yourself.
Pack your swimwear and take a dip in the Grand Hotel’s floating pool which is anchored to the lakeshore. Alternatively, hire one of the hotel’s two Venetian motor launches for a stylish spin on the lake itself.
