Founded in 1681 and reimagined as a hotel in 1844, the Grand Hotel is one of the oldest hotels not only in Switzerland but in the whole of Europe. It was a favourite of James Joyce, Pablo Picasso and Duke Ellington, as well as Queen Elizabeth II, King Farouk of Egypt and Napoleon Bonaparte. Today, it’s not difficult to imagine how even those who might be hard to impress would be wowed by such a splendid place. Elegant, refined and in many ways a touch flamboyant, this beautiful hotel is still every bit as grand as its illustrious history suggests. The hotel’s restaurant, the 3 Michelin star Le Cheval Blanc, is one of Basel’s top eateries; Peter Knogl and his team redefine French haute cuisine as diners enjoy views of the river from its terrace.
We adore the rooftop hot tub. Lie back and relax in warm water, a glass of bubbly in hand, while you soak up the incredible view over the Basel skyline and the mighty River Rhine.
