A member of the Leading Hotels of the World, the El Palace is one of Barcelona’s top hotels. Located in the upscale Eixample District, this heritage property dates from 1919 and retains many of its original features behind a beautiful neoclassical façade. It owes its existence to none other than César Ritz, who was persuaded to depart from his usual preference of only building his hotels in capital cities. Though he died the year before the hotel opened, we think he’d have been proud of the result and especially the suite that’s named after him. Other famous names connected to the hotel include the great Surrealist artist Salvador Dali, who lived here for a time, and visitors such as fellow artist Joan Miro, dancer Josephine Baker, and Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones.
It’s worth looking out for details of the special events hosted by the hotel, such as live music concerts or movie showings on its rooftop terrace. Pop-up restaurants are also a regular fixture, such as Swiss chalet serving raclette, tartiflette and fondue to bring a dash of Alpine cuisine to Catalonia.
